Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan

When Clay Jannon loses his job as a web designer, he finds a new job on the graveyard shift of Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore.  After a few days there, however, he encounters happenings in the store that are odder than even its name or its gnome-like owner.  For example, the store has very few customers and they never seem to purchase anything, but rather borrow large volumes that Clay is forbidden to read. Overcome with curiosity, Clay does look inside some volumes and discovers they are written in an ancient undecipherable code.  When he and his talented techie friends decide to decipher the code, they discover that the secrets of the bookstore extend far beyond its walls.  Winner of the Alex Award, Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore is a charming story of a place you won't want to leave.
